From
a Foundation to a Federation
The Birth of the National Darts Federation of the Philippines
Darterong Pinoy in 1998, was the first dart event organized
by the National Dart Foundation of the Philippines. It
introduced multiple events in one day, single knockout
format in all events and the seeded format in a major
tournament, all standard practices today. This has since
been the historical roots and the thrust of the foundation
- to be at par with international standards, to set standards
for dart excellence, to elevate darts as a mainstream
sports, to change the image of darts and to provide a
new vision for the growth of darts. more>>

Betfair
World Cup of Darts Team Philippines Withdrawal
by: Tito Soncuya
The
PDC Betfair World Cup of Darts is over and England
successfully defended the World Cup of Darts. But
the withdrawal of Team Philippines invited players,
Christian Perez and Lourence Ilagan, continues to
generate insinuations, innuendos, controversy, and
disbelief from the fertile minds of our kababayans.
It all started with the announcement from PDC: “ The Philippines team have withdrawn from
the Betfair World Cup of Darts ….. The pair
of Lourence Ilagan and Christian Perez have pulled
out of the three-day £150,00 event due to travel
problems”.
Immediate reaction ranges
from dart politics to lack of sponsorship, but has
anyone really looked into the real facts of the
case?
Being the dart patron of Christian Perez, I am
privy to what really happened and these are the
facts of the case:
January 16, 2013, I got a text from Jojo Claudio
stating that an invitation was extended to Christian
Perez and Lourence Ilagan to represent the Philippines
in the World Cup of Darts scheduled for February
1-3, 2013 in Germany. I also got an email from Jojo
regarding this invitation. Jojo Claudio is the PDC
liaison of the PDC activities in the Philippines.
I replied to Jojo that I will forward the email
to Ian Perez for his information, preparation, availability,
and conformity. I also checked if the procedures
and time line for visa processing in the German
Embassy is still the same as last year when Ian
and Lourence represented the Philippine to the World
Cup in Frankfurt, Germany. The time line for visa
processing remains the same.
There are 14 calendar days and 10 working days
remaining until the start of the World Cup. It will
take a couple of days to prepare the needed documentation
such as the bank statements, my notarized sponsorship
of all his expenses, forwarding of his pictures,
preparation for his travel plans to Manila, etc.
The appointment for interview will take 4 to 7 working
days and the approval and release of the visa will
take anywhere from 4 to 10 working days. The embassy
staff will not guarantee any specific date of visa
release. Even though there was “enough time”
last year, the visas were released the day before
departure.
With the uncertainty of being granted a visa, it
is a prudent and sensible decision to decline the
invitation in order for another team to take the
place of the Philippine Team. It would be totally
unfair to the organizers to accept the invitation
and suddenly not show up due to visa concerns and
to deprive another team the chance to play.
I informed Jojo Claudio that it is impossible for
Christian Perez to get the visa on time with only
two (2) weeks remaining before the start of the
World Cup. Jojo replied that the invitation was
sent by PDC on January 10, 2013, but he was in India
at that time and only saw the invitation upon his
return.
I hope this puts to rest the lingering unfounded
conspiracy theories on what actually happened. If
questions persist and blame has to be made, I take
full responsibility for the decision of Ian Perez.

CONGRATULATIONS
IAN PEREZ
Finalist of The World, Soft Darts World Championship
PHOTOS
COURTESY OF THE WORLD SOFT DARTS WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP
Congratulations
Ian. The first Filipino to reach the finals of a world
darts championship!
Christian “Ian” Perez, the NDFP number
1 ranked player played for the championship of “The
World, Soft-Tip World Championship 2012”, last
December 16, 2012 at the Kowloon International Trade
and Exhibit Center in Hongkong. After an incredible
run of winning eight (8) straight matches, Ian Perez
lost 4-2 in the Grand Finals to Takehiro Suzuki of
Japan in an alternate 701 and Cricket best of seven
(7) legs format.
This
was the best finish of a Filipino dart player in a
world darts championship – indeed Ian is the
best Filipino dart player. Ian was unknown in soft-tip
darts having played only in his 2nd soft tip tournament.
But his credentials include playing twice as the Philippine
representative to the PDC World Darts Championship
in London and as a finalist in the rich 2009 Shanghai
Open losing to John Part in the finals.
Going to the quarter final round of the top eight
(8), which was beamed world-wide through live streaming,
Ian Perez was the last Filipino standing from a field
of 11Filipino dart players in the top 64. Ian edged
Gary Mawson of the USA 3-2 in quarterfinals. Ian then
demolished USA Ray Carver 4-0, in the semifinals,
the stage 8th winner and who beat Lourence Ilagan
in the top 16.
In the top 64, Ian was ranked 60th and played 5th
ranked Scott Mckenzie of Hongkong winning 3-2. He
next played fellow Filipino Nayr Ocampo and won 3-1.
In the top 16, Ian beat Hongkong’s Tom Tom Wong
3-2.
Ian played in the elimination round as the 100th ranked
player on December 15, 2012 along with the 49th to
100th other ranked players after the eight (8) stages
of the World Tournament. Ian Perez played only in
the final 8th stage and finished in the top 8 earning
enough points to qualify for the elimination round.
Ian learned to play Cricket only 2 weeks before stage
8. The 49th to 100th ranked players played in a round
robin elimination in 16 groups. Ian topped his group
and advanced to the top 64.
The World Grand Finals is the richest singles soft-tip
dart tournament, organized by DARTSLIVE, with a total
cash prize of 2.2M Hongkong Dollars with 1M going
to the champion. Winner is crowned as the ‘best
soft-tip player of the world”. Players qualify
by reaching the top 100 ranking after eight stages
of “The World Tournament”.
Lourence Ilagan topped the ranking after eight stages,
with Ronald Briones 4th, Bryan Eribal 7th and Jerry
Suwerto 8th. The total points garnered by the top
Filipino darters earned them an additional 100,000
HKD as the country with most points.
The Philippines is ready to compete in the world of
soft tip darts. And we are more than ready to play
any darts. Congratulations to all winners and hopefully
we will be champions next time.

DARTERONG
PINOY 2012: BREAKING BARRIERS, BUILDING MILESTONES
A
National Darts Federation of the Philippines Sanctioned
Event
Darterong
Pinoy has once again proven itself as the biggest
dart tournament in Metro Manila after it gathered
a total registration of 2,447 dart players during
its recently concluded P120,000 free registration
tournament last October 19 to 21 at the Sta. Lucia
Mall in Cainta, Rizal. Organized by the National
Darts Federation of the Philippines (NDFP), this
year’s edition of the Darterong Pinoy highlights
the awarding of its one millionth free registration
cash prize as it celebrates its 10th year as a P100,000
and over free registration tournament -- a milestone
in Philippine darts.
More than the landmark free-registration cash
prize, the Darterong Pinoy continues to blaze
the trail of innovation as it launched the elevated
toe line as a fixture for all upcoming Darterong
Pinoy tournaments. Furthermore, to address the
increasing number of registrants, the Tournament
Match Form production was computerized for faster
board assignments and Tournament Marshals were
mobilized to facilitate on-time start of matches.
Truly, the NDFP continues to be in the forefront
of changes to upgrade the standards of dart tournaments
in the Philippines. more>>
